The Philippines advanced in the latest ICT Development Index of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), but it remained lagging in the global market. What technology can help the country further up its game in ICT?
Based on the 2024 edition of the index by the ITU, a specialized agency of the United Nations, the Philippines had a score of 74.4, up 14 percent from 2023.
The index assesses the progress of information and communication technology (ICT) in 169 economies by measuring the level of universal and meaningful connectivity.
However, the country’s score was still below the global average of 74.8.
In Southeast Asia alone, the Philippines requires a long catching up to do as its score was too weak when compared to its neighbors Singapore (97.8), Malaysia (95), and Thailand (91). The Philippines is the lowest in this region.
Aside from the financial resources needed to invest in new technologies, workers in the Philippines seemed not receptive enough to innovation and automation amid potential job losses.
Jo Gavino, chairman of a Filipino advocacy group for BPO workers, previously raised his concern that artificial intelligence, for instance, could replace human employees instead of easing the workload.
However, the Asian Development Bank said that Filipino workers should not fear automation as this could help the Philippines boost its productivity growth, as well as advance their careers as innovation calls for upskilling.
How can the Philippines advance its efforts in this field?
According to a previous report by Hamad Saeed Abdulrahman, an official at the ICT Directorate at King Hamad University, organizations wanting to boost their digitalization can bank on robotic process automation (RPA).
RPA, or software robots, can be tapped to perform repetitive tasks of human employees.
“Dedicating some time to configure and apply RPA to monitor, manage, and report on the full stack of each infrastructure service. ICT teams can now focus on optimization and improvements rather than daily mundane tasks,” he said, with tedious tasks referring to restarting services, monitoring incidents, and generating log reports.
“Although the initial investment required might be tiresome, mainly time and effort. The rewards are exponentially greater. Spending a dedicated time period to get the right setup, is worth eliminating hours of unexpected ICT operations tasks faced on a daily basis,” Abdulrahman added.
